Friendly Bus Stop

McDonald is a well known American fast food restaurant throughout the world, and it has become part of our daily live. In this advertisement I had chose shows that McDonald stays with us event when we are waiting for the bus and have not decide what to eat when we get home. As a college student, who does not drives a car around, he or she has to take the bus instead of his or her car, and this advertisement grabs my attention and also make me feel it companies me. I have to take the bus to school and work and sometimes buses might not come on time or sometimes if I miss the bus, then I have to wait another thirty minutes. If there is a bus stop that decorated like McDonald, I can use my time to read the menu and think what I want to eat after work or after class. This advertisement would make me feel that McDonald is everywhere, event at the bus stop with me. I would go to McDonald to order my food, because I already had decided what to eat when I was at the bus stop. This advertisement also make citizens who waiting for the bus feel like they had been serve event they were only waiting for the bus and not purchasing any food or drink from McDonald. Even though, McDonald is also known as an unhealthy food restaurant from the movie “super size me”, but McDonald’s business still stands in this economic recession. Since majority of the citizens love the taste of McDonald and as being an American, we would choose being satisfy rather than healthy food. Living in the United States, time is money. We would love the convenience McDonald provided, and their fast motion, once you order, they will get your food ready less than ten minutes. They also offer more than once choice, unlike some the well known healthy food restaurant, Subway, they only offer sandwiches. McDonald offers Hamburgers, French fries, Ice cream, coffee, and etc. McDonald also has a lot of competitions, Jack in the Box, Subway, Wendy, Denny’s, and etc. but McDonald did not go out of business, because it had already build up its good reputation.

Our Healthy Friend--Subway

Subway, always a healthy choice for everybody in this unhealthy society compare to other fast food restaurants. In this advertisement I had chosen, it did not have many words to read, it is easy to understand, “Eat Fresh”, this was the main dialogue to grab our attention. Eat fresh? How many of us can eat fresh in our busy days. Statistics had shown that 62% of adult and 34% children U.S. citizens are overweight since 2001. Since time is precious money in this world, people would go to grocery shop for the whole week, and leave them in the refrigerator is not fresh food. Business man wanted to make money out of busy individuals. They would make a lot of fast food and wait for the costumers to purchase. Subway wanted to be different than every other fast food restaurants. But their sell point is “Eat Fresh”. I love Popeyes as much as Subway, but honestly, if I am sick, I would choose the “Healthy Food”, Subway. And from this advertisement, they had achieved five of Fowles’s “advertisements appeals”. People wanted to look sexy after their healthy diet, they will achieve their beauty physical look, they grad costumer’s attention from the word, “eat fresh”, they feel safe when they eat the sandwich because it is Fresh. And they also reach the physiological needs, Food. And in this advertisement, they have more than one option for consumers to consume. They had also included steak and cheese, chicken teriyaki, Italian BMT, meanball, turkey breast and ham, tuna honey oat, roast beef, and veggie delita. Subway also offers different kind of bread to this diverse country. From the advertisement, this really encourage sus to consume. There are also many other healthy food around our neighborhood, and Subway had already blend into this busy society. Whenever you are hungry, there is always a Subway nearby you!

Seven-Eleven Dim Sum is not real Dim Sum

Since most of the traditional food come with at least one Chinese Myth story, I am going to talk about another kind of traditional Chinese food, which called Dim Sum. Now a day, due to the convenience of this busy society, we can just go to seven-eleven grab a package of “Dim Sum”, and walk to the convenient microwave and heat up the package, that’s how people have Dim Sum anytime they want. In the traditional Chinese family, we gather relatives to sit at a restaurant, enjoy some hot tea, and order Dim Sums from the carts, which waitresses would push around the restaurant. During Chinese New Year, families get up so early, which would be around five a.m., and gather families to a familiar restaurant and sit down. They start to ask about their plan for the year, and what they had accomplished the past year. Eating Dim Sum was the best memory in my childhood, because I had fun with relatives that I had not seen in a long time. And my favorite Dim Sum is Siu Mai, I love to sit with my family and eat with them in the restaurants. Last week, my roommates asked me if I want some Dim Sum, I was so excited about the Dim Sums, because I had not went home for the past month, did not have a chance to enjoy my time sitting at a restaurant to eat Dim Sum. They took me to an Asian Super Market, and walked to the refrigerator and took out a bag of Siu Mai (one type of Dim Sum). Disappointed face showed up on my face, this totally not what I was craving for the past week. Dim Sum had become the competition of fast food restaurants, because they are no long “Dim Sum”, because Dim Sum does not have the same meaning from my childhood. I am totally disagreed with seven-eleven Dim Sum real Dim Sums. I enjoy Dim Sum with family sitting at a restaurant and encourage people to spend time with their families instead of eating Dim Sums from seven-eleven or any Asian super market.

Moon Cake

Every traditional Chinese Food would relate to festival days which also come with Chinese myth stories. As the moon cake was related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, which was also in the Chinese calendar, the 15^th of August. As I had mentioned before, every festival comes from a Chinese myth story, and there are so many different versions, but the very well known one for Mid-Autumn Festival Myth begins with nine suns in the sky, the soil was cracking, plants and animals were dead, people were having a hard time to survive, and there was no rain for the whole year. There was one gentlemen call Ho Yi, he was a strong man, he used his archery shoot eight of the suns, and there was only one left. After that, plants growing again, animals come back, and the citizens recommended Ho Yi to be their King to rule the country. And Gods in the heaven very appreciated what Ho Yi had done for the Human; they gave Ho Yi an immortal medicine for reward. Ho Yi got a beautiful wife, Chang E, she was curious about Ho Yi’s immortal medicine. One day, she went into Ho Yi’s room and found the medicine, Ho Yi saw it, and yell at her, Chang E got scare, she did not know what to do, and she swallow the medicine. Ho Yi was so mad, and he wanted to kill her, Ho Yi was shooting Chang E with his arrows, all the sudden, Chang E flew to the heaven, and one of the God save Chang E’s life. She could not go back to where she used to lived, because Ho Yi is going to kill her, but the God still need to punish her for stealing the medicine, since she is half human, half god, they send her to the moon and never come out. Nowadays, people would buy moon cake to remember the story between Ho Yi and Chang E. The moon cake looks like a moon, some of them are round it, and some of them are squares, they have egg yolk in the moon cake. Even the color and the egg yolk shape looks like the moon, that’s why we call it moon cake.

zong zi

As we live in the U.S., a very diverse country, people would know about the very traditional food from other countries. Dim Sum was famous knowing for Chinese food, Pho is Vietnamese food, Sushi is Japanese food, and Taco would be Mexican food. Even we lived in this diverse country, not many people know about the traditional Chinese food, Zong zi. Zong zi made from sausage, peanuts, beans, pork, and egg in the middle, surrounded by glutinous rice, and wrapped by bamboo leaves, tied with strings. It is very delicious food, Chinese usually eat Zong zi during May 5^th (Chinese calendar, there are difference between the Chinese calendar and the calendar we daily use, that’s why we have two birthday, one on the Chinese calendar and the other one would be the day on the calendar we use.) It was a story about this delicious Zong zi, we called that day Dragon Boat Festival. This story was about a well educated poet, Qu Yuan, who worked for the Chu Empire (Chu is a country) during 340 A.D. as a governor, but blame for threaten the Empire by the evil governor who envied about Qu Yuan’s intelligence, the Empire fired him, and he still wanted to help his country, tried to convince the Empire don’t make agreement with Qin Empire (Qin is a country), because he noticed that Qin Empire was not really want to make peace with Chu Empire, he wanted to take over the country, but Chu Empire did not listen to Qu Yuan, and Qin Empire did take over Chu’s country after Chu Empire sent Qu Yuan out the country. Qu Yuan felt so painful because he lost his country, he could not help to safe the country, and he jump into a river (mi luo jiang is the name of the river). Every other family knows about the story, they cry cry cry for Qu Yuan, and they did not want the fishes to eat Qu Yuan’s body, he wanted to protect Qu Yuan’s body, they put rice in the river, the fishes would eat the rice instead of Qu Yuan’s body. And they rowed boats out to the river tried to find Qu Yuan. Later on, people came up with the Zong zi. Now, every year, then Dragon Boat Festival comes, people would go out row boats and eat Zong zi, so we won’t forget about Qu Yuan.
